THE FATTED CALF

THE FATTED CALF

Nothing reveals the state of a Man's heart better than his disposition to money and luxury. Apostle James, a preacher of practical Christian Living in Chapter five of his book when you read from verses one to six condemned strongly fraudsters and people who get their wealth through dishonest means, my emphasis is on the fifth verse.

Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. James 5:5 (KJV)

The day of Slaughter is a figure of speech for describing the concept of fatted calf. In Agriculture, the fatted calf is separated from the rest of the cow and it is kept in a separate place in the ranch.

The rancher will then feed the calf the best of grass till it become very fat. The essence of feeding it that much is to make the calf very fat and prepare it for slaughter.

Don't envy the wicked!

That yahoo boy in your area don't envy him at all, is it because of the exotic cars he drives around or his luxurious apartment?

Why will you envy the fatted calf?

They are heading for destruction!

SHAME ON THE NOBLES OF TEKOA

SHAME ON THE NOBLES OF TEKOA

A careful study of the third chapter of the book of Nehemiah motivated me to write this piece, my emphasis though is on the fifth verse.

This story is not new to many of us, Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the city wall. The rebuilding wall project was divided into portions and each portion was assigned to different families and groups.

“Next to them the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles did not put their shoulders to the work of their Lord.” Neh 5:3

Here we have the nobles of Tekoa, and when we talk about nobles, we talk about the people who belong to the rich class in their days, the billionaires, the very important personalities (V.I.P), men who can single-handedly rebuild the city wall but they refuse to use their resources for God.

The attitude of these nobles is a lesson to everyone not to rely or put our trust in man but rather trust the Lord for help. The Bible speaking in Jeremiah 17:5-8 about putting one’s trust in a mortal man.

“Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” Jer 17:5-8

Shame on the nobles of Tekoa because God built the walls without the co-operation of these awkward squad. The walls were built and sadly for them they missed out on the joy of being a part of it.

There will always be a dissenting minority, perhaps even vocal who will not join with what everyone else is doing. These nobles were mentioned and singled out here not for good reason but for their refusal to support God's own project.

If you are like the nobles of Tekoa, God expect you to repent and change so that you could be remembered for your good deeds and lay up for yourself treasures in heaven where moth, rust and thieves cannot reach.

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matt 6:19-21

7 ATTITUDES OF WINNERS

 WHO ARE WINNERS?

Winners are successful people, they are people who make outstanding achievement here on earth. Winners are record breakers, they carry the intelligent quotient of Jehovah God.

Winners are celebrity, they are stars to their generation, they are solution to the problems of men, they command attention and attraction in their generation. Winners are risk takers, impossibilities are not in their dictionary, success is their lifestyle.

WHAT IS ATTITUDE?

Attitude means your behavior, it is who you really are, it is the reflection of your true self, its roots are inward but its fruit are outward, your attitude is your best friend or your worst enemy, it is more honest and more consistent than your words and Your attitude is your future outlook based on your past experience.

Your attitude either draws people to you or repels them, it is never content until it is expressed, it is the librarian of our past, it is the speaker of our present, it is the prophet of our future, Your ATTITUDE determines your ALTITUDE, your attitude determines where you get to in life

It is quite unfortunate that many people pursue ALTITUDE without considering their ATTITUDE. Apostle Paul was speaking in Phil 2 v 5

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”

Your attitude should be the same as that of the Lord Jesus Christ, When Apostle Paul was telling the Philippians

“Let this mind be in you”

He was simply telling them: Let this attitude be in you, let this life style be in you and Let this behavior be in you

“…..which was also in Christ Jesus”

Jesus Christ was successful and was able to fulfill His mission because of His attitude. The 7 attitudes of winners include:

1.       Purpose

2.       Prayer

3.       Planning

4.       Picturing

5.       Pursue

6.       Patience

7.       Presence of God

I call them the 7 Ps of winners, lets consider them one after the other

1.    PURPOSE

Your purpose is the reason for your existence, A man without purpose is a man without a future, your purpose is your aim and objective in life and Purpose gives determination and strength. In Jud 13 v 5, the purpose of Samson’s creation was to deliver his people from the hand of the Philistines

“For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines”

Samson could not even deliver himself let alone delivering his people, Samson never fulfil his purpose. In Jud 16 v 30, he died with the enemy

“And Samson said, let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So, the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life”

Hear this, until you discover your God’s given treasure you will not be treasured by men

2.    PRAYER

A prayerless Christian is a powerless Christian, A prayerless Christian is like a toilet paper in the hand of the devil, show me a praying Christian and I will show you a terror to the kingdom of darkness. In Mk 1 v 35, Jesus prayed before he succeeded in ministry

“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed”

Before you can achieve anything in life you need to pray, the strongest action you can take in any situation is to go on your knees and ask God for help. In Ph 4 v 6, Apostle Paul counsel us that we should

“Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God”

John Knox singlehandedly prayed and interceded for an entire nation, at a time when there was moral decadence in the land. He told God: “Give me Scotland or I die” and God heard him.

The great Apostle Ayo Babalola in 1930 brought the greatest revival ever recorded in the history of Nigeria, he was a man of prayer.

3.    PLANING

Jesus tells us in Lk14 v 28, 31

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”

“Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?”

These are effective power of planning, Jesus lived a planned life, even His mission here on earth was planned. Your good plan will determine where you get to in the journey of life. Planning makes things easy for a man, there is a popular saying that “he who fails to plan will plan to fail”.

4.    PICTURING

You need to visualize your plan, there is a need for you to have the picture of your plan. God told Habakkuk in Hab 2 v 2

“And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it”

The vision must be written, what do you see, where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? While others are seeing giant, Caleb and Joshua only saw the promise land. The question is what do you see?

Until you picture it, you cannot pick it. When picturing, we need to picture Jesus because our lives depend on Him.

Heb12 v 2 gave us an important insight that the secrete of winning is to picture Jesus.

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God”

5.    PURSUE

A man without plan is not different from a man that doesn’t pursue his plan. When God sees someone who does not quit, He look down and say: “This is someone (a winner) who I can use”.

There is no future for the lazy, it takes faith to pursue. In 1Sam 30 v 8, the scripture says

“And David inquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all

Without pursuing there is no winning, to pursue require a lot of energy.

6.    PATIENCE

Of all the virtues patience is the least dramatic, Patience is the ability to wait or persevere. The Bible refers to patience as perseverance, long suffering. Somebody said “Patience is calm down before blasting”. The hardest lesson to learn in life is patience. Ecc 7 v 8b says

“And the patience in spirit is better than the proud in spirit”

Patience is one quality we all admire but no one can pay the price, how beautiful is the word patience. There is a saying that “The patience dog eats the fattest bone”. Patience is a protection against wrongs, Patience put JOHN in a place of REVELATION. Patience is the vehicle that took Abraham Lincon to the White House. Patience put the name of Thomas Eddyson in the history of greatest inventor, it is a power of holding oneself calmly. It is a needed ingredient for achievement in life.

We cannot learn patience from book but we can only learn it by experiencing it, if you need patience you need Jesus. Patience is the virtue and lifestyle of the kingdom. Peter, John, Mathew and others followed Jesus patiently and the story of their change for better. If you must be a winner then you need Patience.

7.    PRESENCE OF GOD

Jesus carried the presence of God and that was what made Him a winner. The Bible speaking in Act 10 V 38

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him”

Out of all the attitude the presence of God is most important, the presence of God is the abiding presence of God, when a man carried the presence of God, he carried the intelligent quotient of Jehovah God Himself. No man can become a winner without the presence of God.

Men who carry the presence of God in the scripture are men who commanded attention and attraction in their generation. When you carry the presence of God, you carry divine rest from every struggle. God told Moses in Exo 33 v 14

“My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest”

When you carry His presence, you become separated from them Exo 33 v 16b says

“So shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth”

His presence distinguishes a man

What the consciousness of the presence of God would do for you

1.       It prevents you from committing sin

Joseph said in Gen 39 v 9b “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God”

2.       It gives confidence to challenge every form of opposition

David told Goliath in 1 Sam 17 v 45 “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied”

3.       It will make you understand the mind of God

4.       It will make you to see what others couldn’t see and hear what others couldn’t hear

How to bring down the presence of God

                     I.            Praise Him

II.            Communicate with Him in prayers

III.            Love Him with all your Heart

When you add all the alphabets that make up the word ATTITUDE, it gives you 100. This means your attitude must be 100%, it must be good, perfect, positive and complete. If you must be a winner, you must be perfect in your ATTITUDE towards God and man. You’re a winner, don’t settle for anything less.
